How To: Style Your Home Sustainably | Covid-19 Series
Learn how & why I style my home sustainably by choosing “mindful decor” and following the 4 R’s + 1 M of styling.
Last Saturday I co-hosted a virtual “skill share” on Instagram Live with my dear friend, Belinda Lau, owner of Opus Events Co. If you’ve unfamiliar, let me introduce you!
Opus Events is an LA-based event planning company that focuses entirely on sustainability. From minimizing food waste to using eco-friendly venues, vehicles & bridal fashion, Belinda is a pioneer in her industry; shattering the taboo that events are just one-day experiences that don’t affect our long-term ecosystem.
Similarly, as a prop stylist I often witness to a TON of waste on photoshoot & video sets. Large quantities of “set foods” often get tossed with non-biodegradable materials such as tape, plastics, foam & soiled paper. Needless to say, this issue definitely bugs me. As an eco-friendly person, I do my best to mindfully source props, materials & style my own home as sustainably as possible to counter-balance this disparity.
As such, I thought it would be fitting to show Belinda how I approach this practice by styling a record cabinet in my living room. In the video below I show how to use objects & art that encourages what I call the” 4 R’s & 1 M of styling”:
Reusing
Restoring
Restraining
Regional
Making
While we really filmed this for an IG Live Stream, Belinda is a tech wiz and was able to record our session together through Zoom! Watch along in the video below.
Hope you enjoy :)
PS: I’d love to know how you YOU style your home sustainably - please share your tips in the comments below!
